Dear All,
Please, don't disregard University education for midwives and resist the
temptation to say that it will be based on obstetrics. I trained through a
university (which I choose to do) and I am sure that my training was NOT
obstetrical. I am happy with my course because I am confident that having a
higher degree (I am considering doing even more study) will allow me to
assist the midwifery profession. Hopefully the direct entry midwives will be
able to spend time in thier training with homebirth midwives. Remember the
midwives of the future are what we make them. Support all midwives
struggling to ensure the future whether they be trained through university
programs or home programs. Acknowledge the long hours and hard work of all
midwives, as we are all responsible for the knowledge that we pass on,
whether we are home midwives, midwives practicing within a hospital or
academic/research midwives.
We are all responsible for the future,
Megan

Subject: Direct Entry Midwifery attention Rachel
>Dear Rachel,

>Like you this is my first attempt at writing on this chat line however I
>think it's going to become a regular event for me. Like you I was very
>interested in Midwifery but didn't want to be a nurse. I found the Home
>Midwifery Association 10 years ago and for 7 years I trained in a program

>towards that goal with me and other women who took on the program.

>Finally ten years down the track we are now hearing that direct entry is to
>be an option in some form or another ie University programs based more than
>likely obstetrically based.
>This is however good news for our program. This is a break through for us.
> You see I believe we have one of the best community based midwifery
>programs ever developed.
>I have taken on the job of having our program recognized. I would love to
>talk to you some more. Also if you want some information about our program
>please let me know.
