Carmen Lawrence attended the Birthrites conference, on September 11th, and
spoke for 1/2 an hour about the birthing climate in Australia, her own
personal experiences of trying to plan a homebirth in the 1970's and the
current midwifery crisis - as well as taking the time to launch the
Birthrites booklet "Caesarean Birth: Making Informed Choices".

She then stayed until morning tea, listening to other presenters and
speaking with women and the midwives, etc, that attended - a mammoth 2 hours
out of her busy day!

I think Carmen Lawrence has more than just a political interest in the
birthing arena, I think she is personally endeavouring to improve maternity
services. I think she is a valuable connection between politics and
midwifery, and should be recognised as such.

It's sad she couldn't make it to the picnic, but (knowing of her previous
commitment to maternity services and the associated 'happenings') I'm sure
that if she could have been there she would have been. How about sending her
summaries of the day's presentations, along with the organization's official
requests for her political support and suggestions?

Birthing Beautifully,
Jackie Mawson.

Too many Gods;
            so many creeds,
            Too many paths
             that wind and
                 wind,
            When just the art
             of being kind
             Is all the sad
              world needs...
