Most of the doctors I consulted before my 1st VBAC indicated I would be required to fast - "just in case". As a client this certainly did not fit with my expectations of being able to deliver "normally".
Fortuneately the OB I ended up going with believed that even in the case of an emergency the risk of aspiration from food in the stomach was so small compared to the benefits of a woman maintaining her strength through adequate fluid and food intake that he was happy to let me eat and drink as I please.
I had dinner about 4hrs into my labour (only light contractions at this stage probably pre-labour) but had a good breakfast of toast and honey, an egg and juice at the 15hr mark as I was very hungry. The rest of the day I did not feel like eating but did drink a lot of water and cordials - bubs finally delivered just after 6pm and I had dinner after he was born.
During my first labour which was syntocin induced I was not allowed to eat and was given glucose in my drip. I was a lot less tired being allowed to eat and drink as I pleased than I was being fed by glucose in a drip - and my second labour certainly instilled a lot more confidence in me than the first. Maybe a contributory factor to the csec with my first - who knows?
I will be eating and drinking during this labour too - although hopefully it won't last 27hrs like my first VBAC did.
