Interesting segment on radio the other day (I think it was Radio National, but not sure) -- talking about older women having used lemon juice in vagina as contraceptive and for vaginal health. The chap [who did a superb job of mimicking these women; wish I'd been able to tape it] was a scientist who's discovered that lemon juice kills the AIDS virus. He made his PhD students run tests on it in the lab both on sperm and on HIV after interviewing these elderly women from diverse cultures, and found it works. He said the pharmaceutical companies weren't too happy about the idea (can't for the life of me think why!! ahem) but it could be an enormous breakthrough for extremely cheap and safe contraception and HIV protection.

Hi Lynne, Marilyn and all,

according to Stables (2000 p. 24), the pH of the vagina is 4.5 The acid medium of the vagina is needed to maintain vaginal health, as "pathogenic organisms are less likely to invade in this pH". The acid medium is maintained by superficial cells within the vagina that are continuously exfoliated, releasing their glycogen. Doderlein's bacillus metabolise the glycogen, producing lactic acid as a waste product - this in turn, results in the "normal vaginal acid medium of 4.5".
