Dear all
Just a quick note to ask for a name or two.
My amazing little sister gave birth to a beautiful little girl at home with myself and a friend (both midwives) in attendance.  Abbey the gorgeous is perfect, but was a little bit squished inside her mum and so has talipies on her left foot.  Unfortunately here in Shepparton she will have to wait for another three months to be reviewed by the pead to see if there should be any treatment. This is not acceptable to Kathy and Steve (mum and dad) and they would like to know the name of a pead in Melbourne to whom they can be referred too.  Not having been in Victoria long, I would like to hear from anyone who knows of a talented pead who is not afraid of questions.
Thanks heaps.

God bless,
Sandy

Hi Sandy....

my second child was born with a positional Talipies of his left foot....quite severe....the top of his foot would rest against his shin....my family GP referred me to an orthopaedic surgeon when Jamie was only two weeks old...who promptly suggested surgery to correct it....I went back to the GP asking who else I could see for a second opinion....she then referred me to a Mr. Ian Torode...paediatric orthopaed' at the RCH.....I think he's the only paediatric orthopaed there is about in Vicland....(but things may have change over the last few years???) Ian is a delightful man....gentle warm and loving....and no surgery wasn't required to correct Jamie's Talipies...just gentle massage with frequent plantar flexion of the effected foot....every nappy change and while we BF.....what Ian did pick up was the effect of the talipies on Jamies hips...he had a slight diplacia of his hips...Ian considered to be exacerbated by the talipies.....again only watching and waiting overtime saw al! ! l this correct itself....My eldest son Matthew is also under the care of Ian...he developed Perthe's Disease (degenerative hip disease) at the age of two...about six months after Jamies birth....again surgery was recommeded but I scurried back to see Ian who said..."shit no, in little tackers like this fella...we just watch and wait", so watch and wait we have...Matthew turns eleven next week....he has the odd episode with his hips but otherwise is a healthy boysterous young man....

So my point in all this rambling.....contact Ian's offices at the RCH...and ask if he consults in Shepparton....I know he comes to Geelong once a week...and he does consult in other regional centres around the state......

Hope all goes well for Abbey....

Dear Sandy
You might also advise your sister to contact the Victorian Physiotherapist’s Association and see if there are any physiotherapists with newborn orthopedic experience in your area. A good physio can initiate some massage and exercises designed to reduce the severity of the talipies while you wait for the medical appointment.
As long as baby is enjoying her ‘kicks’ at the moment she will come to no harm.
Hope  you get a consult before Christmas
