Very important to talk to a politician about it and the press.

Subject: [ozmidwifery] SA's stats are OUT!!!!!! AARGH!

I thought this might be of interest to our wonderful birthing community.  I have just received the Pregnancy Outcome in SA 2001 statistics, and they are not pretty.  I was sure that the caesarean rate would increase, but have to say am shocked at the true statistics.  The website to see the reports is www.dhs.sa.gov.au/pehs/pregnancyoutcome.htm

Here are a few quick facts:
Total births                                                17704
Caesarean Section                                        27.8%
(elective 11.9% emergency 15.8%)
Induction                                                    28.3%
CS in private hospitals over 500 births p.a.    37.9%
Spontaneous vaginal births                             59.5%

I am unsure, does this still make us the knife happy capital of Australia????

With regret
