Hi Tania,
I have cared for a few women with rheumatoid
arthritis who wanted to breastfeed. By urging the rheumatologist to consult
Medications and Mother's Milk, Tom Hale, USA, all of the women were
able to continue breastfeeding. Symptoms are often exaccerbated in the postnatal
period.
I organised an Occupational Therapist to visit the
women and this was very beneficial. The Occupational Therapist had a wealth of
resources to assist the women with activities of daily living. All of the women
found carrying the baby in a sling helpful.
I can't imagine why rheumatiod arthritis should
exclude a woman from having a home birth. If anything, it would be better to
birth at home because most women with disabilities have their homes set up to
minimise functional problems whereas hospitals don't necessarily cater as
well.

Jeannie Minnis
