As others have said, my experience has been that most women are active at
sometime and then settle down into a kneeling position, very rarely lying for
more that a few minutes at a time. However, I have had several women feel
much better lying down for most of the labour. I have seen this more often
in multips whose other births were in a hospital... sort of a learned comfort
zone. The first birth experience seems to imprint on women's bodies.
That is why I disagree with the advice of "have the first birth in hospital and
then have homebirths after that if it goes alright". MM
