Dear list
I have been too busy to keep up with recent threads but just read this one (over 400 unread!)  and wanted to add my 5 cents worth - apologies if I am repeating anything already covered!
In our midwife & obstetrician ante natal clinic we often see choroid plexus cysts in 18-20 week scans, which is  the usual time for the anatomy and placental location scan, which most clients have.
The report always recommends a follow-up scan around 30 weeks to see if they are still present.  I have not yet seen one that was an indicator of any problems, and the majority have resolved by the time of the follow up scan.  I know it causes a lot of anxiety for the pregnant woman "cysts in the brain" sounds horrible, but I really think that they are nearly always benign and may even be part of the normal development.  Although I have read that they can be associated with some conditions, I have not yet seen this in the past 9 years.
I do believe that many pregnancies were terminated in error when these things were first seen on ultrasounds and interpreted as being severe conditions,  we do not understand the intricacies of foetal development well enough to know what is 'normal' sometimes!

Cheers, Sue

Subject: [ozmidwifery] sylvia's SIL 20 wk scan

Dear Sylvia, this is the reply I got when I forwarded your letter to my sister whom I referred to in my reply to you.

Hi Fiona,

Don't know if this any help.........but James was diagnosed with Choroid Plexus cysts which were described to me as something like varicose veins of the brain's cerebral fluid circulation. If it is the cysts there is another test - the measurement of the nucal fold, but if she doesn't want to know......however, James had both of these factors, I did have the amnio, it showed that he was normal, but the cysts were present up until birth and only disappeared after birth. So far James seems to have suffered no damage from this....touch wood! Feel free to ask any more if required!
