Gentian violet is also known as crystal violet and is one of the stains used
in the lab as part of the "gram stain". Haven't yet got its chemical name
but will post it directly. Here is a list of journal articles on it
especially in relation to thrush or candidiasis. Please note if you have a
thrush infection that wont heal with regular antifungals is is suggested to
actually culture the yeast and get the species of candida identified. There
are several other than albicans and not all are cured by the same azole. One
of the offending species is Candida glabrata (i think) and if my memory is
working fluconazole works much better than miconazole on this one. I have
nothing personally against gentian violet, i just think we should actually
know what it is. It is effective but so was mercurochrome (which I wore
liberally on my gravel rashed knees as a child) and it is of the same
generation of ointments.
