I need to find some men who would be willing to take part in a video which is going to be made by Good Beginnings and Beulah Warren from the NSW Institute of Psychiatry. We will be filming families and their interactions a few days after birth, then at 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 4 - 6 months.
It is a sequel to "Getting to Know you". I have done a cut an paste of the word document, however if you would like it as an attachment, just let me know.

"HEY DAD" - A Film about Fathers and Infant Communication and Social Interaction
Background
Research has highlighted the critical importance of the early years of development, and infancy in particular, on long-term physical1 mental and emotional well-being2,3. Research has also highlighted the fundamental role a secure parent child attachment plays in this process and the important role fathers have.
Babies and their parents are all individuals, and babies are born into differing cultural, social and economic circumstances. It is therefore clear that no one set of rules define how parents and babies should interact and how relationships should develop. The development of good attunement of parent and child in the first months of life promotes a positive child-parent attachment and provides a secure emotional base from which children are able to reach their learning potential.
While the natural process of attunement is influenced by many factors it is strongly affected by the practical early experiences parents have with their new baby. An understanding of early communication and social development in babies is therefore critical to success of these day-to-day interactions.
The film "Getting to Know You" was produced in 2003 to help educate parents and enhance their early experiences and has already been very positively received by professiQnals and the wider community. While Fathers as well as Mothers benefit from viewing the film in its current state, the presence of Fathers in it is minimal. Feedback from the community has indicated a need for a similar educational film that is aimed particularly at Fathers. A film such as this would provide Fathers with a focused guide to how much involvement and pleasure they can have with their newborn (a time when traditionally they often feel marginalised).
Aim
The aim of this project is to produce a film that helps Fathers and babies understand each other. It would specifically teach Fathers about how their baby communicates with them and how much their children can gain from a Father's active engagement in the parenting process from the moment of birth.
The film will be produced as a joint undertaking between Good Beginnings and Dr Bijou Blick and Mrs Beulah Warren (from the NSW Institute of Psychiatry). The film is intended for distribution to the general public or to antenatal groups and early childhood Centres.
We will be filming a variety of families interacting with each other. Families will be filmed on a number of occasions - in the first few days after the baby's birth and then when the baby is 4 and 12 weeks of age and at 4 to 6 months respectively. Filming will occur at a location and time of convenience to the families involved.
Written consent from all families will be obtained prior to their involvement in filming.
