Elle Macpherson challenges London hospitals to go Baby Friendly

Today, at the end of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, UNICEF's Baby Friendly Ambassador Elle Macpherson will challenge London's maternity units to become the capital's first Baby Friendly hospital.

Speaking at Jaganari Women's Centre in Tower Hamlets, she will urge new and prospective parents to write to their hospital's Chief Executive to demand Baby Friendly standards of care.

There are currently NO Baby Friendly hospitals in London, making it the only NHS region where no mothers and babies can expect this highest standard of care. This compares badly with Scotland where more than half of babies are born in Baby Friendly hospitals or County Durham and Tees Valley with 46%.

The Baby Friendly award is given to health care facilities that give mothers the support and care they need to make informed choices and to breastfeed successfully. This includes good teaching on how to breastfeed, allowing mother and baby unhurried time together after the birth, and making sure all staff are trained to give consistent and accurate information.

Visit www.babyfriendly.org.uk/london to see how London's maternity units compare in their progress towards accreditation and to find sample letters to hospital Chief Executives.

London mothers can also e-mail us their experiences of breastfeeding support at [EMAIL PROTECTED] (unfortunately we cannot reply to individual cases but can use your stories to highlight the need for change).
