Yep, the order in the file is the order they are listed. Same goes with List Definitions.

The only reference I can find to ordering at all is the Ascending attribute for the FieldRef element which defaults to true. I have a custom content type that inherits from Document. It includes three custom columns that I have ordered appropriately. But I can’t see how to specify the ordering for all the columns (including the inherited columns). Are they always just appended in the order they’re provided?
