SharePoint's security trimmers will automatically remove results that a user does not have access to. If you don't have any content available for anonymous users, then the behaviour your experiencing is correct.
Are there any other content sources that are being searched? i.e. Is it just SharePoint site content or are you also searching network shares or exchange folders. If you are using Enterprise search to index network shares (for example), the security or user permissions being applied to those files will be applied by the security trimmers also. At a guess, I would assume that you don't have any content available for anonymous users to access. I might also be worth checking your full crawl schedule and if one hasn't run for a while, the manually start a full crawl. Hope that helps.
