I don't think you can convert the type of a field after it has been created, you may need to create a new “single line of text” field, then copy across all the data from the “multiple lines of text” to the newly created field, then continue to use the new field from that point on.
Of course this depends on any dependancies on the old "multiple lines of text” field, such as customisations that use the old field, this sort of thing can get messy. So much pain to go through just to allow sorting on that field. Sezai.
