i can confirm this. paxos is definitely useful for master election, which is 
really important, but you don't want to try to use it for much else.

also, it's not particularly on topic, but i have to contribute a great paxos 
quote from (i *think*) mike burrows:

   In my experience, all distributed consensus algorithms are either
   1: paxos, 2: paxos with extra unnecessary cruft, or 3: broken.
