Well... how big a server farm would you need to simultaneously download 87000 copies of open solaris? So there's a form of performance advantage in reducing the resources (servers) needed to distribute content.
But you're right about speed, even with my slow DSL (1.2 mbps downlink) I almost always get better download performance from a file server than from bit torrent. To categorize Bittorrent generically, it's about distributing files. For sure, most of them are in violation of U.S. copyright. So maybe we're in violent agreement.
