We have been successful with wireless setups in the 0-5000 users range. 
We have not tried anything beyond (yet).

Some of the setups have Open SSID + WPA2-Enterprise SSID some only open 
some only secure.

With freeradius 2 I was able to perform more than 300 successful VLAN 
assignation per minute (implies correct authorization) on a pentium 3.

By default the setup should scale to a lot of users. Then, reaching a 
critical point, you should be looking at service separation, caching and 
other tricks to get it beyond. Some of this was already thought of in 
the design of the solution.

So far, we never had to do the additional tricks. The hardware grew more 
powerful and FreeRADIUS 2 is an amazing piece of software.
