I have looked through the pfcmd file but I cant see where the grammar would be 
getting confused.  The pfcmd script is HUGE and for my first look it is 
daunting, any help would be appreciated.

I would say, almost on all the setup I have seen, usernames are composed of 
alphanumeric characters.  PF will indeed don't like the punctuation or 
backslashes in the usernames.

I think is it a grammar issue (pfcmd grammar).
