Derek,
  I deserved that ;^).
I found the problem late yesterday. When you helped me a while back, you
setup a ./lib/pf/vlan/custom.pm because the Sponsor thing was not fully baked
yet. That's what was causing the headaches (and many of the other headaches
I've been struggling with I suspect). I brought that up to date, and I had a
whole other set of problems that were centered around my authentication
configuration... those were fairly easy to fix, so most everything is working
now as it should (although I still have issues with 4.0.5, but I'm freezing
things on 4.0.4 because it's time to go to production).
  Thanks for the help!
  Don

Please provide log file...
And authentication.pm *WITHOUT CREDENTIALS* if possible.

Cheers!

Ok, I've been banging my head on this for a while. For some reason, devices
(both new and ones I've "unregistered" for testing) do not get assigned a
category any more. This is killing me!
I've rolled back the authentication file to a date when I thought everything
was working hunky-dorey, I did a restart of PF and MEMCACHED. I'm at a loss,
and I was trying to go live this week. I've stared at the code all day and all
I've gotten is confused because there are so darned many places that touch on
the category/roll assignment.
When I unregister my laptop (and remove its roll - BTW, why do you use roll
and category interchangeably? Very confusing!), then go through the
registration process, it becomes registered, but does not get a roll assignment
(registering through sponsored registration) and when it gets assigned to a
vlan after registration, it gets shoved into the macDetection vlan because it
can't determine a roll for the device.
Like I said, I've gone back to authentication configurations that worked
previously, but they are not working now, so I'm wonding if I've hosed myself
with all the back and forth to/from 4.0.5 (which, btw, I also abandoned to try
to fix this and another issue).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
