Louis,

After radius stopping multiple times today. I can't find any reason, radius.log
no help, mysql is running good... I upgraded to 4.0.5-2. Which was quite an
endeavor. Dependency on snmp-mibs-downloader - it's in the non-free branch...
Once I got that it went ok. It uninstalled 4.0.1 and installed 4.0.5-2.

I was able to get through the authentication sources and get the portal profile
straight so it acts in the same manner it did before as in look and feel.

Radius is still stopping. I have an external NMS monitor for the process and
alert and then restart the service pfcmd service radius restart (As it is
still leaving a pid file.) At least this is minimizing the impact on my users,
but I would like to resolve this.

What other places/logs can I check?

Here is the radius.log from time of stop until the radius restart:

That seems to confirm that you never upgraded the actual packetfence package
(as opposed to packetfence-pfcmd-suid).

At this point my recommendation is to plan for an upgrade.
Try using aptitude instead of apt-get. It can sometimes be easier to understand
what it is going to do, especially if you are using the curses version.
Check if the packetfence package is not being held back for some reason.
You may have to resolve a dependency issue if that is the case. Resolving that
is usually not that hard once you know which package is holding you back.

Post again if you need help with that.

As with all upgrades on a production system, make sure you have backups and try
to choose a time and method that will have the least impact on your users.

Louis,

Looking at my /var/cache/apt/archives folder I found the following:

packetfence_4.0.1_all.deb
packetfence-pfcmd-suid_4.0.1_i386.deb
packetfence-pfcmd-suid_4.0.2_i386.deb
packetfence-pfcmd-suid_4.0.3_i386.deb
packetfence-pfcmd-suid_4.0.4_i386.deb
packetfence-pfcmd-suid_4.0.5-2_i386.deb
packetfence-pfcmd-suid_4.0.5_i386.deb

I'm guessing that this is what I saw showing the 4.0.5-2.

Any advice forward would be great.

Thanks

Hi Dave,

Fletcher's sugestion makes sense. You should probably investigate it before
changing anything else.

If that doesn't work you should consider upgrading.

To upgrade
Before changing anything, make sure you have a backup of the database and of
the /usr/local/pf directory.
If this is a clustered system, it is recommended to upgrade the stanby node
first and test it thoroughly before upgrading the active node.
Remember that some settings have changed between 4.0.1 and 4.0.5-2, notably the
way authentication is configured on the captive portals.

Make sure you run this:
# apt-get update

To update the list of available packages.

Then run

# apt-get upgrade

Pay close attention to the list of packages to be upgraded.
If packetfence is not marked to be upgraded you may have to manually mark it or
otherwise resolve the issue.

Hope that helps.

Hi Dave,
Are you really sure this is 4.0.5-2?
Usually pfcmd version doesn't lie (unless it does).

Can you show us the output from these commands?

# dpkg -s packetfence | egrep -i 'package:|status:|version:'

# grep HTTPHEADER /usr/local/pf/raddb/packetfence.pm

There were FreeRADIUS related issues fixed in versions between 4.0.1 and
4.0.5-2.
You might be experiencing one of those.

I've been having trouble keeping freeradius running. It has stopped two days
in a row. The .pid file is still in the /var/run but if you do a ps-aux | grep
"free" I get nothing. I delete the .pid file and restart it.

The watchdog process sees the pid file but not helping since it is still there.

I am running on Debian, I should be on 4.0.5-2 but /pfcmd version shows 4.01?

This is in production and I am taking grief for this not working right.

Thanks for your help
