This latter suggestion seems most Palm Zen like - if I start a memo,
then start the calculator before pressing done, returning to memo means
that I see what I had typed to date.

Now the analogy breaks down if you say start a _new_ memo, and haven't
typed in the required first character on the first line...  Because I 
_think_ that at Hotsync time that new memo is tossed.
