I like the DbgMessage function but I also use FrmCustomAlert like a printf.
The FrmCustomAlert also gives me the opportunity to break execution if I
want.
Create an Alert with ^1, ^2, ^3 and then call it.
FrmCustomAlert(DebugAlert, "Ouch!", StrIToA(DebugStr, (long)error),
"Frame 134");

If you get the R5 patch, the debugger supports the DbgMessage command
from the Palm Device or emulator for example:
DbgMessage ("Hello from the Palm OS application!");
would display "Hello from the Palm OS application!" in the log window of the
debugger. I hope this helps.
