To generate an IR subcarrier you need to alter the baud rate to 2x the
carrier frequency (i.e. a 40khz signal needs 80,000 baud) and send a
string of capital Us (0x55 in hex). You get 5 pulses per U, so you need to
send just the right number and use some other mechanism to initiate them. 

There are other hardware adjustments that might help or not, but this is
the basic trick.  (unless someone is toggling the break bit directly at
40khz- there are theoretically other ways).
