Does it stay black or does it revert back to white?  Is it in a table?
You'll notice that the trigger for the address book turns to black when you
are editing a field.  Maybe there are some clues here?  You can always
handle it yourself by looking for trigger event and popping up the list.
Not as nice and easy, but... not much about this is nice and easy ;)

I don't handle the list in code, I just look to see what was selected from
the list.  I assign the list to the pop control in constructor.  But for
some reason, sometimes the control will show the list and sometimes when I
hit the control all that happens is the control goes black, but no list is
shown...

I didn't look at your code below, but if you handle a pop-up list in your
code, than you have to display it.  If you don't handle it and the system
gets handled = false, the system should pop it up for you, if the list ID is
correct (if it isn't and you are using a debug rom on POSE, it will crash).
