Want to write in a letter and have list item selected

Several of my users have requested the ability to write a letter in the
graffiti area and have the list scroll to the first selection that matches
that.  That is, as they write in the graffiti characters, the selection
moves to the matching list entry.

Is there a simple way to implement this without writing my own list routine?
