I'm trying to develop a Palm interface to the X-10 Firecracker RF remote control, and
am encountering some serious serial port swapping hassles. Since my PC has an S3
video chipset, I can't use COM4, and with my mouse on COM2 and modem on COM3, that
means all my other serial devices must share COM1.

Since the Firecracker also sits on a serial port, I find I must frequently move the
Firecracker between the PC and the Palm for testing, and must frequently HotSync the
Palm to handle code changes (since I can't develop this kind of app under POSER). The
X-10 PC app for the Firecracker opens and closes the serial port each time a button is
pressed, so it will nicely share the port with other serial applications. But HotSync
is not so kind (since it normally must monitor the port).

I could really use a small modification to the HotSync application that would add a
"Release Serial Port" flag to the context menu, so that HotSync could share the port
as well. That would reduce the number of times I launch and kill HotSync each day
from dozens to, at most, just one.

Does such a modified version of HotSync already exist? Or does the present HotSync
have an undocumented switch to support this feature?

TIA,

-BobC
