Yes you can.  However, you will need a male-male, null modem connector
to have it talk with devices such as modems and instruments with serial
ports wired like a modem device.  I ended up making a short cable like
this from my old Newton serial sync cable to test a bunch of serial
devices.

The cradle is mostly a glorified serial cable.

The insides of the cradle us just a small board with the special mount
to the handheld and the Hotsync button wired to one of the terminals of
the mount.  There isn't even a discrete component in it.  If you are
handy with a soldering iron, I can give you some more tricks like hot to
have the cradle's hotsync button start a modem hotsync instead of a
local one. :)
