To answer myself<g>....
I tried to manually register the palmPlugin.dll using RegSvr32.exe, and got
an error stating that it was not able to locate DllRegisterServer. I think I
must have some out of sync dll's in my system32 directory (according to the
MS Knowledge base). I'm going to reinstall SP4 or SP5 and see if things
clear up. The install process for CWR6 must not display any indication of
when .dlls don't get registered properly.

I have just updated to R6 after doing a total "wipe" of R5 off my machine
(regedited out every reference to Metrowerks I could find), and I am also
getting the BDWM error stating that the helper app can't be found in the
registry. If there is no reasonable fix to this recurring problem, maybe
someone would kindly post the registry entry that it is looking for so that
I can hack it in.
