Actually, the questions are pretty high-level. Someone previously
pointed out that the system traps are actually the Palm OS API
routines. So the answer to your second question is very easy: get the
Palm OS Reference and Companion documents and read them.
Your first question is impossible to answer. You could look at the
example apps that come with the SDK, to see how they are written (i.e.
when do they make API calls, and why). Your question is similar to
asking "How do I know exactly when sprintf() is being called in program
X?"
