I don't know about power consumption, but it certainly slows down drawing. And I have found that trying to double-buffer a full screen on a Palm V in 16 grays will leave you with very little room left in your dynamic space for doing anything else. We also get some complaints from Palm IIIxe owners that the colors look washed out. They simply need to adjust their contrast knob to fix that problem, but definitely the Palm IIIxe contrast goes a little nutty when you switch to 16 grays.
