SPT1700 continuous barcode scanning

I am developing an application on a Symbol SPT1700 using Palm OS 3.1.

Is it possible to enable the barcode scanner beam to be constantly active
while the button is pressed, whilst still processing barcode reads?

This is needed to scan down and read a list of barcodes without having to
repeat the pressing of the barcode scan button.
