I'd expect the problem is that the code in the book is assuming that the
wireless strength indicator is supported.  The "unsupported" error you got
backs that up.  If you added code to the library to check to see if the WSSI
is valid and only called the WSSI routines if it was available, I'd guess
that the program would work, although there may be issues with the Omnisky
spam they stick at the end of data received through their proxy.

There is a knowledge base article about checking to see if WSSI is
supported.  Check it out.
