Personally speaking, AppForge is a really good idea that probably works best
in a corporate environment. But I don't like having to load on a runtime
.prc. I remember all the pain of trying to keep up with what the current
Visual Basic runtime was, distributing the current runtime, etc. Same with
CASL. However, these tools do make quick work of prototyping and iterative
development methodologies. IMHO if RAD tools were great for shipping
commercial software, they'd be built with RAD tools.
CodeWarrior is a decent enough C/C++ development suite. It has it's quirks
and every major release is a challenge to get around the bugs that seem to
pop up. But they fix their bugs and the quirks get better. One advantage is
the number of samples available that are CW projects. Good debugger. The
Constructor environment for developing resources is nice but take the time
to learn about the features and what they do. It makes getting around what
you don't want Constructor to do (like automatically generating header
files) so much easier.
I haven't looked at the GNU tools lately. At last look some 1.5 - 2 years
ago, they were good. Tight code, tools to create your Palm resources, etc.
but you had to be comfortable in command line driven tools. I prefer a GUI
that can also be command line driven. There are GUIs available now, I
believe.
