I have a PalmIII that I have happily used since 98 or so (can't even remember anymore; but it is a 3Com branded device :) ).
I find that the Graffiti space is the area most likely to get marked up so I put some scotch tape over the entire lower "tap" area and I haven't had a problem ever; in fact, I find that the scotch tape is easier to write on, kinda like a pencil on paper feel. Make sure you don't use the really smooth stuff, get the "gritty/less transparent" variety of tape (which is almost exactly the same width as the tap area...the stuff I am thinking of is made by 3Com incidently....conspiracy?). I have dropped this thing, gotten it wet, let batteries die in it (el cheapo recharables...doh) and not been a nice person in general to Gizmo. But it continues to work in spite of me. ramble mode off.
