I can't comment on what the future holds, as I really don't know. What I will say is that you're quite right when you describe how the OS and applications were originally developed. There was no wall between the two, and the OS really was just enough to get the job done for the applications that shipped on the ROM. This was probably the right thing to do at the time. A huge amount of progress has been made towards turning Palm OS into a real operating system over the years, and I too hope that the split will lead to further improvements in this area.
With Palm OS 5, remember that the decision to hide internals is a technical one rather than some new philosophy.
