Search for "secret handshake" in the archives.  You have to either use the handspring 
secret handshake or grab the little utility app that Ben talks about in that thread.

I don't remember all the details, but the Handspring line detects when a serial
cable/cradle is attached and opens the serial port to watch for keystrokes
coming in from an external keyboard.

Visit the Handspring web stie and search the FAQ for "keyboard" and "serial".  I
vaguely remember reading about it a long time ago, but don't recall how you
disabled it.
