I know that you can buy cables to interface a Handspring Visor with a
standalone GPS device. However, I want to do a demo for a prospective
client *tomorrow* and don't have time to order one so I'm trying to build my
own with stuff I've got lying around the house or the neighborhood Radio
Shack. I've got a serial cradle for the Visor, which would be fine but that
doesn't allow it to connect to my Garmin eTrex since the Visor needs to draw
power for its RS-232 circuitry from the PC while performing a serial hotsync
and the Garmin can't supply it. I tried modifying the cradle by adding a 9v
battery and a 7805 5vdc voltage regulator to draw power from but haven't had
any luck. I've tried feeding the 5v+ to the TxD pin on the DB9 connector
side and also to pin 8 on the Handspring connector side, which the docs seem
to indicate is where it draws its power. I'm a programmer, not an electrical
engineer, so I'm kind of fumbling in the dark. But I can use a soldering
iron.

I know this isn't a programming question, but I thought there might be some
other experimenters who had solved this problem or an EE who could give me a
suggestion. Quick and dirty is ok!

TIA
