Hi. I am writing this not as a developer, but as a consumer. My Palm m505 with PalmOS 4.1 has started giving me some problems lately. Generally, it seems that I'm getting unspecified fatal errors when I try to fill memory beyond about half of the 8MB. This often occurs during the retore of handheld databases following a hard-reset. While the fatal error is usually unspecified, I occasionally get a little bit more detail. Specifically, right this moment I'm looking at a Fatal Alert dialog with a reset button that contains the following text:
"MemoryMgr.c, Line:4415, Invalid handle" I've been seeing this regularly for a couple of months now, but before that I never saw it, although I'm doing the same kinds of things I've always done. I have also just tried reproducing it using the Palm OS Emulator configured the same way as my m505. In fact, I installed all the apps that I normally use on the emulator, Hot synched it to fill it with some data and backup the databases, and then hard reset my m505, hooked it up and synched it, allowing it to restore the handheld databases that I had just backed up from the emulator. This is what generated the error above. At this point, I'm thinking it's a hardware problem, perhaps RAM that has gone bad or something. The device has not gone through any kind of trauma, and it is not that old, but I don't see what else it could be. I've tried everything I could think of. It seems to me that this last test represents attempting to load a completely validated software configuration into the device. It's out of warranty, and not worth saving as far as I'm concerned, despite the $400 I spent on it, because the new ones are so much more powerful for less money. But before I go and buy a replacement, I'm trying to validate my suspicions about the hardware being at fault. To that end, I am posting this looking for any or all of the following: 1. Anyone out there who has seen this before, or maybe even who has access to the source file in question and can tell me what is going on at line 4415, or that can in any other way offer an opinion as to whether this is a hardware problem. 2. Any kind of diagnostic tool that will test the RAM on the device -- preferably one that will go around the OS including the memory manager. 3. Anything that might be helpful here but that I haven't thought to ask for. Anyway, I've gotten beyond the limits of my knowledge of Palm OS internals here, and so I could use any help that I can get.
