I have tried defining a transparency color in the bmp files and defining it accordingly in the rcp with TRANSPARENTINDEX, however there is no transparency shown neither for pre-OS5 nor for OS5 devices.
I was having that problem once too. I think I fixed it by removing the COLORTABLE keyword from the bitmap definition.
