I have just written a ftp client. I can't send you the source code since it's a commercial software, but you may want to take a look at lftp. It's a simple 'command line' ftp client whose source code is available. As I remember, it's protected by GPL, so you can't copy the source code to create a non-GPL program, but it may be a good source of information.
