If using standard internet explorer..when being presented with a link that will load a pdf file (actually .. any file) instead of doing a left mouse button click,do a RIGHT mouse button click. You should see a popup menu with options that include "save target as". Select the "save target as option". You should then have a standard save dialog box that allows you to decide where to save it to.
