I am also finding some very strange behavior with system sounds.  I agree with 
the above posts about caching.  I can successfully use SndSetDefaultSound to 
set system and alarm sound types.  But the problem is trying to determine the 
current settings for these sound types prior to setting them.  I have tried 
both PrefGetPreference and SndGetDefaultSound to capture the System and/or 
Alarm settings.  The values that come back make no sense!  The define MaxAmp is 
set to 64 and the values that come back from these 2 calls are in the range of 
0x6000.  That value make no sense.  Is not close to an overflow value.  Also is 
not maskable to a value that makes sense.  Does anyone know what's going on?  
Is there something I an doing wrong to grab the current sound level settings?

The other strange thing is that these calls work correctly in the Debug Treo 
650 Simulator.

I am doing this on a Sprint ROM 1.08 Treo 650.
