Well, in this case I'm really sure I'm right as I haven't had lzma-utils installed in months. However, I do appreciate your points.

Is there at least a straightforward way to automate reinstalling the dependencies of a particular package? The best I can think of right now is to try to parse the output of cave/paludis/etc, which isn't ideal since they're pretty verbose.

Agreed that sed VDB is not generally a great idea.
