Found it. It didn't happen on the first try... and doesn't always seem to happen. But to make Pan blow up, all I need to do is hit "H" to turn on 'Show All Headers in Body Pane' It now surfaces at random in other groups even though I've turned off all headers. I'm trying a few things to see if there is any commonality - I'll report anything else I find when/if I find it. This also brings back something I mentioned last week - Settings not getting saved unless a clean exit is performed.
