That makes sense to me, and almost as soon as I hit 'send', I remembered the $PAN_HOME variable. So perhaps a modification to the idea would be to use a lockfile in $PAN_HOME and if that file is present, don't start a second instance (ie, one instance per $PAN_HOME).
