Dear HERAtics,

Recently, thanks to the efforts of Steve Furlanetto, Adrian Liu, Asantha
Cooray, and Peng Oh, we were awarded a multicampus research grant from the
University of California to try to bring together theorists and
experimentalists in the area of 21-cm cosmology. This workshop is the
first major event to come from this funding. I think this would be an
excellent opportunity for those of us connected to the instrument to climb
the learning curve for delivering the kind of science we can expect from
HERA.

The announcement is attached below. Please consider coming!

Dear colleagues,

It is my pleasure to announce a workshop on October 1-2, 2015 at the
Beckman Center in Irvine, CA:

“Preparing for the 21-cm Cosmology Revolution”

This workshop, sponsored by the University of California Cosmic
Dawn Initiative, aims to bring experts in 21-cm cosmology together with
theorists and observers studying the “Cosmic Dawn” and era of reionization
with a broad range of techniques and methodologies. The goal is to
discuss synergies with different experiments, optimize methods to test
theoretical models, and strategize about future probes.

The workshop will focus on fostering interactions across the
high-redshift community, with a small number of invited talks and ample
time for questions and wider discussion. In particular, we expect to
devote more than half of the meeting time to guided discussions. The
workshop should prove especially useful to researchers interested in
developing multi-wavelength constraints on the reionization era and
synergies between disparate observational approaches.

We invite you to visit the conference website for more information:

http://www.physics.uci.edu/21cm/index.html

There you will find the list of talks; because of the focus on discussion,
we have a limited number of invited talks and will not be accepted
contributed talks, though there will be numerous opportunities for input
from all attendees. There will also be a poster session open to all
attendees.

The workshop itself will be intentionally small (of order 60
participants) in order to maximize discussion and interaction across all
attendees. As such, we are currently accepting applications for the
conference. Special consideration will be given to University of California
faculty, students, and postdocs, but all are invited to apply.

The conference will be held at the Beckman Center in Irvine, CA on
October 1-2, 2015. The registration fee of $200 will include full breakfast
and lunch on both Thursday and Friday and the conference dinner on Thursday.

Thank you very much,

Asantha Cooray
