There are so many words on what type of software you should use when starting to design paper models. Much more important is how you start using the brain before you start using the computer. I am myself always starting with pencil and paper trying to sketch down a constructive idea for the model I intend to make. It could be to find the most intersting combination of foldings, boxes and cylinders that make up a stiff enough structure. Of course foldings and glueings also should be planned in a way that it is all buildable. (For example: Where you want a part to be pressed against something when glued, this something must be given a chance to get apropriate resistance.)
Not until I have an approximate idea of the folded parts I need for the model drawn down on the paper I go to the computer to make a 3-view drawing (if it is a scale model I am going to do) or to draw some test structures. It means that I start the design process by (hand-)making the assembly sketches well knowing that I will have to revise them several times before I am through. Those who can handle CAD-programmes (I can“t) probably get faster to correct forms of complicated surfaces, but they too need good basic ideas for the construction. I remember my first job when I used long boring sittings dreaming away with the pencil in my hand drawing paper model parts in the note book. It took several years before those parts developed into reality. But thinking and dreaming was a good training.
