Here's the back story on these chains: Sambo's was started in Santa Barbara, CA in 1957. The original restaurant is the only one still in existence. The chain went into bankruptcy in the early '80's after lots of bad press related to their Little Black Sambo decor and a ruling by the SEC requiring the company to change its questionable accounting practices.
Denny's was started in 1953 as Danny's Donuts. When the menu expanded in the late '50's the name was changed to Danny's Coffee Shops, and in '63, the name was changed again to Denny's. The restaurants of the Danny's Coffee Shop era all shared a common floor plan and architectural them which can still be found across Southern California.
