And if we do have a commit-bit? Wouldn't independent edits just cause conflicts at commit time? (SVN newbie here) Or do you figure that we should just use fast update/edit/commit cycles?

Make sure you do check whether the sources have been modified since you started editing the file. Other than that, use SVN's merging capabilities.

I think we're safely spread across time zones, too.
